You’re likely wasting your time if you do this (as a Newer Entrepreneur)

This post goes out to folks who are newer on their business journey. The first year or two of business are a critical time – they will either make or break you.

You’ll either feel excited and inspired… or deflated and discouraged.

And it all comes down to your results… and the work you do.

The unfortunate truth is that most things newer entrepreneurs focus on are total time wasters and will not produce the types of results they expect.

I constantly see people talking about how you need to follow the next shiny strategy, buy the next shiny course, and promising big results in record time…

… But come on, there’s a reason you’re still where you are today. Shiny new, overnight success isn’t a thing! You need to do what actually WORKS, even if it’s not very sexy!

I wanted to share a few things I personally wasted my time on at the beginning of my business that I now know don’t create the results (and what to do instead).

TIME WASTER #1: TRYING TO BE TECHY (when you’re really not)

This is something newer entrepreneurs think they need to have in place and it’s BS. Technology can be daunting for many people, especially if you don’t find yourself very techy.

But the thing is? You do NOT need very much technology to run a successful business that reaches six figures. Yes, really. You just need to know WHAT is essential (and trust me, the essentials are EASY!) and let go of the rest until you’re ready to tackle it – or hire someone who does when you’re ready.

There’s no use in building out big complicated techy sales funnels when you’re new… if you have no traffic or leads coming in, no one is gonna be going through those funnels in the beginning anyway to make any sort of difference to your bottom line.

So you’ll be still at your 9-5, wondering why you’re still there when you’re working ALL the time. That’s why.


Most people do NOT need a website to become successful and plentiful with clients. I had spent weeks building mine in the beginning back in 2014 and it made little to no difference in my client attraction. I still had to hustle to get clients and do all the things.

Now, I am fairly techy and I have created websites before so it wasn’t that big of a deal, but as someone who still was working in her 9-5 at the time, I now know that there are ways to create an audience and get clients WITHOUT spending weeks on building a full-on website.


We love to overcomplicate things. Just because you have an online business doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. In fact, as soon as you start to see your business as an extension of life – and how you behave in real life, things all of the sudden become SO much simpler.

No, you don’t need the complicated systems or funnels or tech or offers or whatever. You just need to TALK TO PEOPLE. What people used to do… there’s no need to separate yourself so much and put automation or technology in the way of getting the client… Unless that is, you don’t CARE about getting clients.  😉


This comes with practice (or by working with a good coach, hint hint 😉 but most people either are underpriced and make you overwhelmed (especially if you still have a 9-5 and limited time) OR they create offers that are “nice to have” versus “must have” for their ideal clients.

In fact, most people dig themselves into a hole… working with tons of clients but yet still making very little money. How exhausting! When you understand how to position your offers well, price them appropriately, and communicate their value, it becomes so much easier – plus you get the freedom you desire at the same time.


This is the biggest thing of them all – I tried to do it all myself in the beginning. Yes, I had help of some courses, I’d talk to newbie coaches on free calls, I attended tons of webinars… but I was still in consumption mode. I was learning, learning, learning… but not so much DOING.

When I hired my first coach after joining her group program, she forced me to see what I was really missing… and that I was stuck in my comfort zone. I was doing the things that kept me busy, made me feel like I’m doing work, but really they were NOT progressing me forward at the rate I wanted to progress.

Working with someone who had their eyes on my business was a total gamechanger. I went from making barely $1K per month to $10K per month, I quit my day job, and moved to my first luxury apartment in Chicago…

Before that, I couldn’t even comprehend making a full-time income from my business. I had no idea HOW. I felt like I fraud. Like it wasn’t in the cards for me. It just felt so hard… But that all changed and I would not have been able to make it happen if not for the support, accountability, and the PUSH she gave me that helped me step closer to my potential.

SO…. what could you do instead?

Well, let me share a few tips…

ESSENTIAL #1: Laser focus and commit to doing the work.

The truth is, most people have not made the decision to truly commit to their business. They are still treating it like a hobby, something fun to do, and then they wonder why they aren’t making that much money.

You need to laser focus, create massive commitment, and DO the damn work. When we commit to and put our business as a priority, we become incredibly resourceful. Things you thought you couldn’t do before, become easy. Things begin to flow. And it’s all because you made a decision to make it happen – no matter what.

ESSENTIAL #2: Do the work that actually gets results, even if it’s uncomfortable or sounds too “easy.”

Sometimes we know what to do or how to do it, but yet we’re not actually doing it. Or sometimes, we might hear a strategy and think “it’s too simple” and we go chasing something shinier and flashier, when in fact, the simpler things often work BETTER.

To add to that, most people are addicited to struggle, the drama, the worry. We can’t live without it. What would life look like if you could finally let go of the struggle and make your life and growth easier for once? Simpler? How would that feel?

ESSENTIAL #3: Get accountability and support in your next steps.

I can’t stress this enough. If you could do it on your own, you would have already done it. Most people have been trying to get their business off the ground for months if not years… and still struggle.

You are simply:

  1. too close to your own business to see what needs to happen,
  2. you might have mindset blocks that are preventing you from getting outside your comfort zone to do the work necessary to win, and
  3. you might need that encouragement and reassurance when the going gets tough (because guess what – it’s not always rainbows and unicorns).
